Hartwell

Hartwell is the most active entertainment hub in the region, particularly on weekends when the lake draws visitors from across the Southeast.

Lake Hartwell

Lake Hartwell is the anchor of outdoor life in this region. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963, the reservoir covers 55,900 acres with 962 miles of shoreline. It consistently ranks among the most visited Corps lakes in the nation, drawing approximately 9.6 million visitors annually.

Activities on and around Lake Hartwell:

  • Fishing: largemouth bass, hybrid bass, striper, black crappie, bream, rainbow trout, and walleye
  • Boating, water skiing, and sailing
  • Swimming beaches at Hart State Park and multiple Corps-managed day use areas

  • Hart State Outdoor Recreation Area: lake cottages, camping, boat ramps, and picnic facilities on the Lake Hartwell shoreline
  • Tugaloo State Park: a wooded peninsula on Lake Hartwell with hiking trails, camping, and lake-access cottages; the Sassafras and Muscadine hiking trails wind through native oaks, walnuts, and hardwoods

Rivers and Paddling

Bell Family YMCA in Hartwell serves as the primary multipurpose recreation facility for the region, offering fitness equipment, group exercise classes, and programming for all ages and family types.

  • Hours: Monday-Thursday 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. / Friday 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. / Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Programs include youth sports leagues, group fitness, aquatic access, and family programming
  • Operates under Christian principles while welcoming all backgrounds, ages, and incomes

Parks and Recreation

Hart County Recreation Department provides a comprehensive range of community sports and outdoor amenities at 200 Clay Street, Hartwell:

  • Tennis courts, basketball courts, and batting cages
  • Picnic shelters and playgrounds
  • Baseball and softball fields
  • Youth sports leagues across multiple sports and age groups

Hart County expanded its park system from a single 26-acre park to five county parks totaling more than 200 acres, including two large lakefront parks. Long Point County Park serves as a competitive events venue and has hosted the Wet and Wild Triple Crown of Watercross for multiple consecutive years.

Elbert County maintains community parks in the Elberton area, including the historic Granite Bowl complex, which has hosted athletic events and community gatherings for generations.

Golf
