Hospitalist Overview

Clinical Component

The admission blocks during the day will be from 7am-12pm and 1pm-4pm and on an average day the admissions can range between around 5-10. The provider who has the earlier admission block will be called through the rest of the day from 4pm to 7am.

Nurse Practitioner support will start at 7pm each night and cover the hospital until 7am the next morning. There will be a provider on call until that time but it very rare to need to come back to the facility, unless someone is crashing or there is an ICU admission the APP team can handle everything until the provider gets there at 7am the next day and if something presents itself in the ED there is an ER physician who will be there to assist until the hospitalist gets there.

On a normal day in the hospital the hospitalists can expect to round on 11 to 18 patients but no more than that, usually on average of about 15 patients per day. The team prefers to get as many discharges done in the morning as possible but regularly have some happen in the afternoon from around 11am to 2pm.

From a procedural standpoint HCMC would like a provider to come who has the aspirations to perform A-lines, central-lines, and intubations but it will not a requirement more of an added plus. The biggest requirement will be the knowledge and proficiency with vent management.

Being a smaller hospital there will be a decent amount of stabilizing and shipping patients. Generally, the patients will be sent to Nashville to Ascension St. Thomas Hospital or Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee.

There is a small academic portion at HCMC. They have an affiliation with a medical school and have third- and fourth-year medical students who will come in every day to shadow and work with the physicians on the floor. This is something that is not an obligation but finding a candidate with a small interest in teaching would be a great addition to their team.

Competition

HCMC serves Henry County and some of the additional surrounding areas. Murray, Kentucky is about 20 miles north and that is home to Murray Calloway County Hospital. There may be some higher acuity patients that will get sent there but anything else that HCMC needs to send out will go to Ascension St. Thomas in Nashville or Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
