Navigating the Clinical Component

The IR program at UK Kings Daughters Medical Center operates out of a dedicated suite on the hospital campus with four procedure rooms, including a bi-plane suite, and access to CT for biopsies. The team runs a structured 3-week rotation that builds in a full week off every cycle, which is uncommon in high-volume IR programs and reflects the system's investment in physician sustainability.

Schedule Structure

Stroke Program

UK Kings Daughters holds Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center (TSC) designation, which requires 24/7 availability for mechanical thrombectomy and specialized care for patients with large vessel occlusive ischemic strokes. The IR team carries primary responsibility for EVT coverage. Stroke intervention experience is strongly preferred in the incoming physician; a neurointerventional fellowship is not required, and the current team actively proctors colleagues on stroke cases.

Collaborative Service Lines

The IR team works closely with the following services on a regular basis:

  • Cardiology (8-suite Cath Lab; door-to-balloon target under 60 minutes)
  • Vascular Surgery (5 vascular surgeons on staff)
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery (3 CT surgeons on staff)
  • Neurosurgery (2 neurosurgeons on staff)
  • Hospitalist service (28 hospitalists; primary on nearly all inpatient service lines)

  • Pulmonary/Critical Care fellows rotate through the ICU
  • ED residents rotate through for specialty volume
