Watauga County Schools consistently outperforms state averages, and the proximity of Appalachian State University brings an educational culture and set of resources to this community that is unusual for its size. If you are relocating with children, education is one of Boone's genuine strengths.

Public Schools

Watauga County Schools serves approximately 4,700 students across 11 schools: eight K-8 campuses and two high schools. The district spends $12,503 per student annually, above the state average, and 100% of teachers are licensed.

Elementary and Middle Schools (K-8)

The district operates eight K-8 schools, several of which receive strong ratings from both Niche and GreatSchools:

  • Hardin Park School (Boone): one of the highest-rated schools in the district; 859 students; 11:1 student-teacher ratio; frequently cited by parents for its welcoming culture and strong teaching staff
  • Parkway School (rural Watauga County): Niche grade A; 649 students; 14:1 ratio; diverse student body including university, Samaritan's Purse, and local families; among the highest-ranked elementary schools in NC (#94 in the state)
  • Valle Crucis School: highly regarded by families in the pastoral western corridor; consistent praise from parents for staff quality and community culture

Two Rivers Community School is a tuition-free public charter school with an experiential learning model, using the community and natural environment as classroom resources. It draws families specifically interested in project-based, inquiry-driven education and has a devoted following among parents who want something beyond a conventional classroom experience.

Watauga High School (9-12; 1,279 students; 12:1 student-teacher ratio)

Watauga Innovation Academy is the district's alternative high school option (305 students) for students who benefit from a non-traditional educational approach, with over 95% graduation rate.

Dual Enrollment

Watauga County students have access to dual enrollment through Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&TI), which operates a satellite campus in Boone. High schoolers can earn college credit while completing their high school diploma, at no cost.

Private Schools

Private school options in Boone are limited in number but serve families who prefer faith-based or independent school environments.

Watauga Christian Academy (K-8; approximately 116 students; 19:1 ratio) is the primary independent option within Boone, offering a faith-integrated curriculum.

For families who prioritize private education, the broader region and reasonable driving distance expand the options considerably:

  • Asheville area (~90 minutes): Asheville has one of the strongest private school concentrations in western NC, including:
    • Carolina Day School (independent, K-12; strong college placement, average tuition ~$18,000-$22,000)
    • Asheville School (boarding and day, grades 9-12; college preparatory; average tuition ~$55,000 boarding / $32,000 day)
    • Christ School (Episcopal boarding and day, grades 8-12; tuition ~$50,000+ boarding)
    • Faith-based options including several Catholic and Christian academies
  • Blowing Rock area: The village of Blowing Rock is 15 minutes from Boone and feeds into the same Watauga County schools but has a distinct community character that many physician families prefer for its quieter, more residential environment.

Higher Education

Appalachian State University is the defining educational institution in Boone. With 21,500+ students, it is the sixth-largest campus in the University of North Carolina system. Programs of particular note include education, business, environmental sciences, nursing, music, and the arts. The university:
