As a psychiatrist employed by Touro University Medical Group (TUMG), you will practice within a Dignity Health facility—St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, California. This unique collaboration between an academic institution and a leading nonprofit healthcare system creates a hybrid "priva-demic" environment that offers the autonomy and intimacy of private practice alongside the innovation and mission of academic medicine. The result is a facility where you can shape future clinicians while delivering compassionate, high-quality behavioral health services to a community in real need.
St. Joseph’s Medical Center is a fully accredited regional hospital with 355 beds, a staff of nearly 900 physicians, and more than 2,300 employees. Behavioral health services are anchored within St. Joseph’s Behavioral Health Center—a licensed, not-for-profit psychiatric hospital featuring a 35-bed inpatient unit. This standalone center, located on North California Street, provides crisis stabilization, inpatient care, medical detox, and a range of outpatient psychiatric services to thousands of patients each year. It functions as both a vital community safety net and a key training site for psychiatry residents.
In 2021, St. Joseph’s Medical Center partnered with Touro University to launch a new Psychiatry Residency Program under the sponsorship of TUMG. This ACGME-accredited program is designed to train psychiatrists to serve underserved populations, with a strong emphasis on community psychiatry and forensic training. Touro University serves as the employing institution and academic anchor, while St. Joseph’s Behavioral Health Center provides a stable and supportive clinical setting for both patient care and resident education.
The facility also partners with prestigious affiliates including Napa State Hospital and the Sacramento VA, enabling residents to experience a wide variety of clinical environments. However, your practice will be firmly rooted in Stockton—there are no travel requirements for faculty. Your work will focus on building a high-functioning outpatient and inpatient psychiatry program, supported by well-resourced facilities, institutional backing, and a community hungry for mental health leadership.
