You’d be joining a group of 6 board-certified Gastroenterologists and two full-time Nurse Practitioners. We’ve helped recruit Dr. Maher, Dr. Mittal, and Dr. Kanagala. In working with this group, I’ve learned that they work collegially and efficiently together, so you would be stepping into a turn-key practice.

Dr. Vikram Kanagala

Dr. Kanagala completed his residency at Guthrie/Robert Packer Hospital and fellowships with Medical College of Wisconsin. He joined Eisenhower last year and has been in practice for four years. He does both general and advanced procedures. He will also likely be one of your first phone calls during the interview process.

Dr. Sarah Maher

Dr. Maher completed her residency at Penn State and fellowship with SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She joined Eisenhower once she completed training and has been with them for a year in July 2022.

Dr. Yash Mittal

Dr. Mittal has been in practice for two years and with Eisenhower for three years. He has always wanted to remain in Southern California. He completed his bachelor’s degree at UCLA, medical school at UCSD, residency at Yale New Haven Hospital, and returned to UCSD for his GI fellowship. He speaks English and Spanish. Dr. Mittal approaches his patients in a holistic manner, seeking to understand his patients’ overall needs, limitations, lifestyle and goals. “Together we devise a treatment plan to regain wellness that is doable and in line with the patient – and his/her family’s goals and expectations.

Dr. James Conti

Dr. Conti has been in practice and with Eisenhower for 12 years. He completed all of his training at Albany Medical Center. You can see him featured in Eisenhower’s “Living Well” podcast under his profile.

Dr. Mamta Mehta

Dr. Mehta has been in practice for seven years and with Eisenhower for six years. Fun fact: She was studying economics at Stanford and became a financial analyst. After about a year, she realized the business track wasn’t for her and began her pursuit of medicine by enrolling in medical school. She completed her residency at Cornell and fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Mehta was raised in sunny California and after more than ten years in New York, is glad to be back. She enjoys swimming and cross-training activities, loves Indian classical dance as well as various forms for contemporary dance and music. She considers herself to be a foodie and enjoys exploring new restaurants. She and her husband (who is also a physician) have two beautiful young sons. She speaks English, Hindi, and Gujarati.

Dr. Adewale Ajumobi

Dr. Ajumobi (Dr. AJ) has been in practice and with Eisenhower for seven years. He is originally from Nigeria. He completed his residency at Loma Linda and a gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. He performs several GI and endoscopic procedures including upper endoscopy (EGD), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes, Bravo PH, breath tests, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, enteroscopy and manometry. He is skilled in the removal of large colon polyps that would have otherwise required surgery. He is the founder and editor of BowelPrepGuide, a website that provides bowel preparation resources to patients and providers. He is married with two children.

Donald Gardenier, NP, DNP

Dr. Gardenier has been in practice for 40 years and with Eisenhower for the last four years, working closely with Dr. Mehta.  A first generation American, he is fluent in Dutch and Spanish, and is a returned Peace Corps volunteer.

Randy Bloom, NP

Randy has been in practice for 3 years and with Eisenhower for two years, working closely with Dr. Ajumobi.

Dr. Barry Hackshaw, VP of Medical Specialties

Dr. Hackshaw worked as a Cardiologist in the Palm Springs area for 20+ years. When he retired clinically, he joined Eisenhower Executive Team. He oversees all subspecialists under Internal Medicine and is heavily involved in recruitment in addition to a department’s growth and success. I have worked with Dr. Hackshaw for several years. He is a kind person, extremely knowledgeable in medicine and the healthcare business, and has your best interest in mind. During the process he will give you the information you need to make a well-informed decision. He will also be involved in reviewing your offer with you and addressing any questions you have.

Other Key Executives

Martin Massiello, CEO and President

Previously Eisenhower’s COO for 13 years, Marty was named CEO of Eisenhower upon the former CEO’s retirement and 20-year tenure. He will often join in on the interview process when he is available because he enjoys establishing relationships with all physicians and staff, and wants a boots-on-the-ground perspective to continue to build upon the success they have built over the last 50 years.

Dr. Alan Williamson, CMO and Vice President

Dr. Williamson divides his time between his Vascular Surgery practice and his leadership roles at Eisenhower. He also works very closely on a lot of growth projects across many specialties, utilizing the very generous donors in the community.
