Clinically, this position is Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm split between clinic and procedures. This is approximately a 60/40 split of clinic to OR time, once you’re ramped up. Dr. Shandera elaborated on his typical work week to give me some insight.
This is a Urology position for someone that has Robotics experience (delete), where you can jump into a turn-key practice and be busy from Day 1. They only currently have Dr. Hendricks who is still in the process of ramping up. You would be joining a team of 5 Urologists. They currently have 2 locations for clinic space, and 3 different locations they can operate and have block time. Dr. Williamson and their administrative time are already working to expand their space because of the consistent growth.
Dr. Shandera shared that his week is variable based on how many procedures he needs to perform. There are some weeks where he does 2 full OR days and 3 clinic days, and there are some weeks where he does all clinic or 4 clinic days with 1 OR day. Dr. Shandera appreciates that Eisenhower lets their group tweak their schedules the way they want.
When he’s in clinic he sees anywhere from 20-25 patients per day, with the majority being follow ups. He normally only needs 15 minutes for his follow-ups but he emphasized that this is the schedule that works for him. The incoming physician can shape their practice and schedule according to their comfort. During clinic. Dr. Shandera also performs in-office procedures. They currently have 15 exam rooms and 5 procedure rooms, but they are also working on acquiring additional exam rooms.
Dr. Shandera does anywhere from 350-500 cases per year, both in the OR and minor procedures. He can do procedures at the main hospital OR, the Delores Hope Surgery Center (also on campus), or the Rancho Mirage Surgery Center, which is 2 blocks down the street. In total, he produces approximately 8,880-9,400 wRVU’s per year. For his colleagues, some are producing more, and some are producing less.
“For an area this size, it punches way above its weight class when it comes to the quality of medicine you can practice, activities, economics, and what it has to offer. I love the lifestyle that this area offers me and my wife. We have proximity to the coast with a robust airport, roads and infrastructure are great, and there’s no traffic! Also, only rounding on one hospital cuts down on headaches. Lastly, this facility is amazing. We have state of the art equipment, and sterilization in the clinic is the same as the hospital, which is unheard of.”
The Eisenhower Urology Specialty Clinic provides a comprehensive range of services including patient education, diagnosis, treatment and management of urological conditions.
Urological conditions treated include those of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra and male genitalia. Common conditions treated include:
Clinic Call: You take call for your own patients during the week, phone call only.
ER Call: is 1 weekend of every 11 weekends (Eisenhower group of 5 plus the 5 Urologists in the private group that share in call). The Hospitalists with Eisenhower are very proficient and admit all Urology patients. There is a nightly stipend associated with ER call. You will only be covering one hospital.
When I spoke with Dr. Shandera, he said the call burden is very minimal and it is “very rare” if you ever have to come in an see a patient on the weekend.
