Clinically, this position is Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. There’s a lot of autonomy in practicing the way you want to, work on what you’re passionate about. You can by 100% clinical or have a blend with protected academic time. You can see all types of cancers or sub-specialize. Read more to see what options are available.
Eisenhower’s Cancer team takes a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and have all the support staff and specialists you may need to deliver the best level of care. When I visited the group, the Oncologists voiced that they feel well-supported and that they have a voice in the vision. I sat down with Dr. Plaxe (GYN ONC and Director of Cancer Center) and Katie (CAO of the Cancer Center), and they shared they are committed to maintaining that open dialogue and input from their physicians.
If you’re 100% clinical, the incoming physician will likely be working 4 days at the Rancho Mirage clinic, next to the hospital. The other day would be at the La Quinta clinic. Both clinics also have infusion centers/chairs 5 days/week. You’d have an RN and MA, and they are willing to hire a dedicated APP as well, if you’d want one.
You also have the option to incorporate teaching, clinical trials, and/or research as a part of your FTE (full time equivalent), for which you’ll get protected time. See below for more details on their active clinical trials and research. This is one of the unique opportunities to practice academic medicine but get paid in a competitive community medicine model.
Eisenhower has 80+ employed Primary Care physicians referring to you, in addition to their specialists and other physicians in the area that will be referring to you due to the reputation Eisenhower has built and maintained.
Call is shared equally with the 5 other Oncologists onsite, covering every 6th weekend. The goal is to grow the team to 9 Oncologists in the next 1-2 years, moving the call to 1:9. The Hospitalists with Eisenhower are very proficient and admit any Oncology patients, which doesn’t come up often. Call is primarily phone call.

UC San Diego Health Cancer Network Affiliation
Since 2017 Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center has been affiliated with UC San Diego Health, home of Moores Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center and member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of the world's leading cancer centers that treat patients with a broad spectrum of cancers and are recognized for dealing with complex, aggressive or rare cancer. This affiliation has yielded an ever-growing array of vital new resources for desert residents who would otherwise have to travel out of the area for advanced cancer care.
One of only 51 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation, and one of only seven in Southern California, UC San Diego Health is an academic health system, conducting more than 300 interventional trials that are often unavailable anywhere else, including 40 investigational immunotherapies and stem cell-based approaches. Eisenhower’s affiliation with UC San Diego's Health Cancer Network provides access to these services. In addition, experts from UC San Diego Health provide a monthly personalized cancer therapy clinic, pancreatic screening program, blood and marrow transplant clinic, genetic counseling, and access to other specialties as needed.
